Writing Assessment

This piece of writing is the result of a lesson plan centered around opinion-writing. The two standards used for this lesson were CC.1.4.K.H, "Form an opinion by choosing between two given topics" and CC.1.4.K.I, "Support the opinion with reasons." After working through the lesson, the kids were given a sheet with different competing topics, such as music vs. gym or summer vs. winter. The students were then asked to pick a favorite one and to draw a picture supporting that opinion. Each student was then called to an adult in the room to work through the KidWriting process of sounding out each word in the sentence. My assessment was simply a checklist in which I would determine if the student clearly stated their opinion and provided a supporting statement to explain that opinion.

The above picture is a copy of the data collection checklist that I created for this lesson. 21 out of 21 students were able to properly state their opinion and provide a supporting explanation as to why they felt the way that they did. While assessing each student's work, I also wrote comments regarding common errors that were made that would help me determine what other writing topics I should focus on in the future.
