Mayflower Social Studies Lesson
This clip shows a lesson that I created for my kindergarten students to show them what it would be like to travel on the Mayflower. Often, Social Studies is a challenging subject for students this age to grasp. By designing a simulation, I was hoping to help the children realize the danger that the Pilgrims faced when they came to America while developing their comprehension skills. To create an interdisciplinary experience, the children were acting out the events in a story as I was reading it aloud, connecting Social Studies and Language Arts.
By the end of the lesson, the students were able to identify the group of people who traveled on the Mayflower and how they felt when they arrived. This was the first of multiple lessons regarding Thanksgiving as a national holiday.
